The Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism, Ms Philda Kereng praised the organisation when giving a keynote address at official handing over of waste oil receptacle tanks at Gamodubu landfill recently.  She said Tshole was one of the beneficiaries of the Ministry’s National Environment Fund (NEF) because of its accountability, adding that it had set a good example for other beneficiaries and potential beneficiaries of the fund.

Minister Kereng also commended Tshole Trust’s partnership with the ministry, which she said, facilitated the national environmental agenda, particularly as uncontrolled disposal of used oil posed a pollution challenge.

She expressed hope that the project would benefit both Kweneng District and the greater Gaborone area. She said provision of funding to Tshole Trust for implementation of the project was a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to collaborate with other stakeholders for successful project implementation.

Ms Kereng further urged role players in Kweneng to ensure the facility was well kept and maintained, in the interest of public health and environmental protection.

The waste oil receptacles will be used for collection and storage of used oil, which is considered hazardous waste, before being be transported for recycling in South Africa, she said.

She further highlighted that P771 125 was disbursed towards supporting the installation of the Gamodubu, Ramotswa and Kanye used oil receptacles, in line with NEF objectives as detailed in the National Conservation Strategy.

Tshole Trust board chairperson, Mr Patrick Thedi, said they hoped to install 29 tanks nationwide, to make impact in protecting the environment, however they were financially constrained. He thus called on the ministry to assist through the National Environmental Fund, as requests were coming in from other parts of the country including Lobatse, Mohembo and Charleshill.

Meanwhile, Kgosi Samuel Ramotlabaki of Gamodubu invited the minister to visit the village, to address problems brought about by the landfill. ENDS
